Glossary

USM                     Canon Ultrasonic Auto Focus drive motor. Available in two types, the ring ultrasonic is faster and quieter, but heavier and more expensive than the Micro-motor Ultrasonic focus drive.

FTM                      Full Time Manual focus: Allows you to manual focus while your Canon lens is set to Auto Focus.

EF                        The standard Bayonet style lens mount for Canon EOS cameras.  EF stands for Electro Focus Lens. Typically EF cameras are full frame DSLR cameras or 35mm film cameras.

EF-S                     Canon lens mount created for Canon DSLR cameras using a APS-C sized image sensor with a 1.6x crop. EF-S lenses cannot be mounted onto EF bodies. EF lenses can be mounted onto Canon EF-S camera bodies.

L-series                Canon Luxury lenses, Very good optical performance and solid construction.

DO                        Diffractive Optics camera lens technology is another world first from Canon. In short it is a lens design with reduced size and weight while offering higher image quality than a comparable focal length lens that incorporates conventional glass optical elements. The technology is based on a lens element with an intergrated diffractive grating.

Prime                   Fixed focal length lens.

Macro Lens          Are used for close-up photography. Typically macro lenses have a magnification of 1x or 1:1 to produces live sized image on the camera sensor.

Focal Length        Is the distance between the centre of a lens focused at infinity and the point at which light passing through the lens converges to a single point called the focal point.

AF                        Auto Focus

ISO                       In digital cameras ISO refers to the sensors sensitivity to light. Setting the camera to a higher ISO number makes the image sensor more sensitive to light, while lowering the ISO number makes the image sensor less sensitive to light. There is a rough correlation between ISO numbers used on DSLR cameras and to the ISO rating of film speed or sensitivity to light.

EOS                     Canon’s DSLR cameras are sold with the brand name of EOS. This stands for “electro-optical system”. EOS is also the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn. It is pronounced (ee-oss)

SLR                      Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera uses a mirror that reflects all the light coming through the camera lens up into the viewfinder. When the cameras shutter button is pressed the mirror flips out of the way allowing light to pass through to the cameras film or digital sensor (DSLR). This allows the photographer to see exactly what will be captured.
